What to see and do
Maissana is an uncontaminated Ligurian oasis. It is not far from the Riviera. It is just 20 minutes from Levanto and the Cinque Terre.
In the 11th century, Maissana and its surrounding hamlets fell under the dominion of the Fieschi family of Lavagna. The Fieschi built the nearby castle of Lagorara. In 1547 this territory became part of the Republic of Genoa. Architectural remains from this period can still be found in the area.
Maissana and its surrounding hamlets are agricultural villages, as can be seen from their simple architectural structures. The linking village houses, connected by archways and vaults, line its narrow streets.
There is an interesting archaeological site in the Lagorara Valley. A red jasper stone quarry, which dates from the Copper Age (3500-2500 B.C.) is located here. Red jasper was used to make stone tools, such as arrow heads. It is possible to book guided tours for groups or schools.
The village of Tavarone hosts a well equipped tourist and sports centre. And hikers will love the beautiful paths through the chestnut woods, which abound in this area.
