What to see and do
Carro and its surrounding villages are characterized by brightly coloured village houses, linked to one another with arches and narrow alleys, and surrounded by quiet woods. The climate is mild.
Carro has Roman origins. In the middle ages it passed from one dominion to another. Carro was situated on an important communication and trade route, “la Strada del Sale”, which connected the Pianura Padana to the Ligurian coast. Evidence of this historical period can still be seen in Carro and in its surrounding villages. Today, these ancient commercial routes have been transformed into hiking paths.
The Museo Mineralogico (the Mineral Museum) is located in the town hall, which is also the headquarters for the Comunità Montana dell’ Alta Val di Vara. The museum was inaugurated in 1999. An interesting collection of minerals and fossils from the area are on display here.
Carro is also well known by classical music lovers for its Festival Paganiniano dedicated to the famous Genoese musician Niccolò Paganini. Paganini’s family originally came from Carro.
