What to see and do
Calice of Cornoviglio was once a possession of the Bishops of Luni. It was later disputed over and conquered by the Malaspina family. In the 12th century, the Malaspina built the strategic hilltop castle, the Castello Doria Malaspina. The Centro di Educazione Ambientale del Parco Regionale Montemarcello-Magra, an environmental education centre, is located inside the castle (info: www.parcomagra.it). Several small museums, such as the Apiculture Museum, can also be found in the castle.
A village festival, which takes place at the end of July, is dedicated to Calice’s famous honey.
The area’s economy is based on summer tourism and agriculture (olives, honey and wine).
There are many possibilities for hiking in this area. The Alta Via of the Monti Liguri (the Ligurian Way) can be reached by following the Passo Alpicella.
